In December 2012 Ian and Beth explored the Antarctic Peninsula aboard the Ocean Nova on a 7 day Fly & Cruise trip. Prior to their Antarctica trip they went trekking in Torres del Paine and onto the Patagonian Ice Cap itself.
They were kind enough to share a few thoughts on their trip…
With the advice and assistance of Swoop my wife and I booked a months holiday, three weeks in Patagonia and a week in the Antarctic. Why choose these locations? Well the Patagonia section appealed to our sense of adventure and exploration, trekking in the Torre Del Paine National Park and an eight day unsupported expedition on the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, not something to be taken lightly. To balance this we sought something slightly more relaxing especially as it was Beth’s fiftieth, so we chose a fly cruise to Antarctica and we were not disappointed.
We went for the fly sail option as we had limited time and didn’t fancy risking two to three days rough sailing across the Beagle Channel.
After flying out we boarded the ship with approx 60 other passengers and set sail. The accommodation, though tight, was comfortable and quite adequate for the time on board. The food was excellent, accompanied by drinks if required. The staff were all really friendly and helpful. If that wasn’t enough there was also food laid on at other times.
Every day we embarked on at least one, though usually two, excursions. Some of these were sea based observing the wildlife, we saw various seals, whales as well as numerous penguins. The land excursions visited a number of bases, both occupied and unoccupied, and yes more penguins, a multi-sensory experience. Don’t miss the opportunity to savour the superb home brew vodka at the Ukranian research station or to take a dip in the icy sea, brrr.
Each evening there were very informative lectures, on subjects such as penguins and the formation of Antarctica, delivered by equally knowledgeable and very enthusiastic staff. There were full briefings on the following days activities plus a de-brief at the end of the day.
Unfortunately the trip went all to quickly and we soon found ourselves lining up for the flight out.
We had a fantastic time. The ships crew and hotel staff were excellent as were the expedition staff who were extremely enthusiastic and knowledgable, all doing everything possible to ensure we had the experience of our lives, which we did.
If you’re looking for something a bit special, somewhere a bit different then this is the trip for you.
