Tell us about Zodiac excursions
The crew was always very interested in ensuring safety first. Having the assistance to board and exit the zodiacs was very helpful - especially for passengers who were not as agile. Being able to enjoy the pristine surroundings up close and personal, was amazing. The best cruise was when we were surrounded by birds, penguins, seals and whales - all reasonably close and able to be captured in photos.
Tell us about the expedition team
FANTASTIC!! This team was a well-oiled machine with amazing leadership. We were fortunate to have both the CEO and VP of Marketing for Polar Latitudes on board. They blended with the other staff and passengers without fanfare. Hannah Lawson, expedition leader is exceptional. There were so many stellar moments and plenty of human interaction. This team was skilled, incredibly helpful, and fun!
Tell us about the Seaventure
Seaventure was perfect from my perspective. The cabin size was great and I shared with another individual. The crew was consistently cleaning the area to help ensure our health safety. The food was amazing. There were always options to suit most any diet and were beautifully displayed. All of the staff who served us at meal time were pleasant and attentive. If this crew were able, they could provide great points for other cruise ship staff. We were even entertained by many members of the staff. It was such a terrific experience.
Tell us about the Camping
I totally enjoyed this experience. Once again, the expedition team made sure we had all of the necessary gear, good direction on what to expect and how to establish our "camp site". They ensured we were brought to the site in ample time to get set up, and established a fair 'quiet time' to allow time for rest. We were accompanied by several members of the expedition team overnight and promptly delivered back to the ship in the early morning.
Tell us about the Paddling
This was a wonderful experience. I had never kayaked before and I felt the expedition team provided good direction and, once again, ensured safety first. Paddling in this beautiful, unspoiled environment seemed almost surreal. It gave me a keen interest in kayaking once back at home.
Something Else?
We used a transfer once in Buenos Aires that was arranged by Swoop. While costly and I know we could have used an Uber, this service was very good and made our transfer enjoyable. Our 'guide', Diego, provided great information about the city, favorite local foods, and key tips. I also greatly appreciated our hotel in Ushuaia and having the day prior to boarding the Seaventure. If I were to do this trip over, I would add an extra day on either side to ease the travel wear.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?
Remember to pack for time on the ship. I was overly focused on what I needed for excursions. And carefully plan travel to and from the main attraction to allow time to enjoy.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
I'm very pleased that Polar Latitudes is taking precaution to care for Antarctica, its surroundings and all of the birds and wildlife living there. I think any vessel passing through those waters should have to follow the environmental protections of IAATO.
Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?
In addition to reminding travelers about time on the ship (and therefore, packing appropriately), I would encourage passengers to prepare a 'health kit'. This might include cold and sinus medication, cough drops / medicine, and general care medicines. My only disappointment was what was likely a language barrier with our customer experience coordinator. I had a couple of questions that I felt weren't answered fully and I didn't press. Nothing major and it was reasonably trivial in the end.
How prepared and excited for Antarctica did you feel?
I felt 95% prepared and 1000% excited. I struggled with what to take along without overpacking. I mostly achieved a good balance with the exception of the aforementioned miss on considering on-ship attire for the time we would spend sailing.
