What was your most memorable moment?
Hard to pick just one moment --- the colours in icebergs, the complete lack of fear of penguins (they have to be the only animal on the planet that doesn't run and hide from humans), the active volcano, the whales and their incredible curiosity and playfulness, the moment I set foot on Antarctica --- it was one memorable moment after another.
Which of the following best describes your adventure?
Life changing
On a scale of 0 to 10, how likely is it that you would recommend Swoop to a friend or colleague?
10 out of 10
On a scale of 0 to 10, how would you rate your trip: 66 Degrees South Fly Cruise?
10 out of 10
Tell us about the expedition team
The Expedition Team on Ocean Nova was stellar. Knowledge level -- several had PHD's in a variety of disciplines that gave us all a chance to learn that much more. Hadleigh as Expedition Leader -- was thoroughly knowledgeable, and communicated the rules to live by in Antarctica, as well as the need for personal safety. Marcello, Beate, Nikko, and Jonathan all had incredible insight in their chosen fields and presented the information in an enjoyable and sometimes entertaining manner that helped us all increase our awareness and knowledge of life in Antarctica. I did not attend all the lectures, but the ones I did were definitely 10 out of 10!
Tell us about the wildlife
Wildlife experience was better than expected. Penguins are delightful, and so friendly. Whales awe-inspiring, birds were amazing, and of course the seals were also amazing. Best encounter -- 2 hump back whales who were curious. Amazing encounter? A leopard seal (penguin predator) was asleep on the beach at Whaler's Cove, and a couple of penguins walked right up to it, and one penguin poked it in the belly. Turns out penguins and outrun leopard seals on land -- so the seal didn't even bother with the penguin.
Tell us about Zodiac excursions
The Zodiac excursions were outstanding -- every one of them different and intriguing in their own way. There was never any question that our safety was always foremost in the minds of the Expedition Staff, as well as the welfare of the wildlife and the ecology of Antarctica.
Tell us about the Ocean Nova
I would highly recommend Ocean Nova. The cabins are perfectly adequate, the food and service was excellent. I did not want to experience Antarctica from a distance, and Ocean Nova is the only vessel that allows you to get up close and personal with the continent, it's wildlife, and it's feel.
Something Else?
This trip was better than I had hoped for, and the small size makes it a more intimate and interactive adventure.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?
Remember to put your camera down and absorb what's happening around you. It's a once in a lifetime experience - forget your digital gear and just luxuriate in the occasion.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
I'm in awe of the original explorers, saddened by mankinds mercenary approach to wildlife and it's habitat, and encouraged by the hope that Antarctica can recover from the wholesale slaughter of wildlife - whales in particular as a result of visitors being Antarctica Ambassadors.
Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?
I didn't discuss this with fellow passengers, but I found the links to the Adventure Planner frustrating. They should be hotlinks that don't require a lot of navigating. Dial up the quality of Adventure Planner.
Was there anything else Swoop could have done for you to help you prepare for your trip?
Tell us sooner that you will be providing boots. Never did get a swoop neck scarf although I did see some passengers with them.
