What was your most memorable moment?

Helicoptering to a landing on sea ice, and then walking 20 minutes on the ice to see the grandeur of a huge Emperor Penguin colony. It was a beautiful blue sky day in the vastness of ice, surrounded by iceberg's frozen in the sea ice. The curious penguins, proudly showing off their chicks, made it difficult to maintain distance. When one would approach there seemed always another behind. I fantastic experience. And then we got to do it again the next day!

Tell us about Zodiac excursions

An exciting part of the adventure. The first time stepping off the wobbly platform onto the zodiac was an adventure of its own, but it always felt safe, and after the first time was easy. We toured Gourdin Island by zodiac and saw 3 different seals, including a Leopard resting after a meal and a Crab Eater juvenile maybe only 2 months old. Floated around many icebergs and watched Adelie and Gintoo penguins in and out of the water. And the zodiacs are the transport to shore most days!

Tell us about the expedition team

Sara and her team made the adventure very special. Her excitement and descriptions of personal experiences gave a backdrop to the experiences we would have. Martin, Chris, Gary, and Charlotte were great. Whether driving a zodiac, providing information in a lecture, chatting at meal time or just be available for questions, they all added immeasurably to the trip. My favorite was Cloe and her excitement about krill, and plankton in general. She made the smallest of creatures seem so very exciting, and also very important.

Tell us about the Ortelius

I loved cruising on this ship. Cabin was great. The food was much better than my expectations. Having been on cruise lines around the world this was my first excursion class adventure. The gap between the two was far smaller than I expected, but I definitely like the smaller spaces. I would definitely choose the ship again, and may look to an Artic cruise in the near future.

Were Swoop right to recommend Oceanwide Expeditions?

Yes

Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?

Yes. In this setting somehow the information related to global warming and the impacts to our existence as humans is more evident and obvious. In a lecture on the issue data was presented and explained, and models of consequences explained, without a focus on blame. In the end the numbers tell the story.

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?

Pay attention to the information provided, especially related to clothing. Weather really changes fast and getting cold while on an excursion will ruin your day. When the best weather is +2 C (36F) it is very difficult to get warm once one is cold. And sometimes put the camera down and just take in the vastness of the ice and the sounds of Antarctica.

Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?

Excellent! I used mostly the online information, but the team regularly contacted me to check if I needed any help and/or to offer options for more detail. What I did use was very useful and enabled me to be well prepared.

How prepared and excited for Antarctica did you feel?

I felt very prepared. In the end I probably did take a bit too much, wanted to make sure I was covered for any weather. We had extraordinary weather so I didn't use everything, but if the weather had been as bad as it sometimes is I would have been prepared. And excitement existed fromthe time we signed up, and really kicked in when we arrived in Ushuaia!
