Carole's Trip Date:

What was your most memorable moment?

Seeing the Penguin and Albatross colonies on the Falkland Islands (Sanders Neck and West Point Island). Enjoyed watching all the young fur seals around the old whaling stations of Grytviken and Leith Harbor. The stop at Mikkelson Cove was also nice as the weather was good and it was a nice easy walk, and I could take time to just observe the many Gentoo penguins and chicks.

Were Swoop right to recommend Poseidon?

Yes

Tell us about Zodiac excursions

The Zodiac cruises were great. We were able to see a lot without going on land. The crew was very cautious and safety oriented, and I felt safe at all times. My favorite cruises were probably the one to Hercules Bay to see all the Macaroni Penguins and the cruise through Cierva Cove through all the floating ice and past the glaciers.

Tell us about the expedition team

The Expedition Team were all super friendly and knowledgeable. They all had their special expertise which was nice. My favorite lectures were Serena's about the Albatross and Penguins. I really learned a lot about these interesting birds.

Tell us about the Sea Spirit

My cabin was very clean, comfortable, and roomy. Food was fantastic. Always a large variety and plenty of it. Staff was very accommodating if you wanted something special. Yes, I would definitely sail on the Sea Spirit again.

Something Else?

I was impressed by how safety oriented the captain and entire crew were as we traveled to our destinations. They did everything they could to make sure we took the most safe and comfortable route. I always looked forward to Sergey's daily briefings! I also really enjoyed the Library and Club Lounge on the ship where you could relax, find a good book, have a drink, enjoy the view, and mix with the other guests.

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?

Don't over pack. It wasn't as cold as I thought it would be. I never used my heavy-weight thermal underwear. Medium weight is fine. You don't need two pairs of gortex gloves/mittens. If they get wet (which they shouldn't), they will dry in 30 minutes. Sock liners are great to wear under heavy sox in your muck boots. Remember, you only wear our "expedition" clothes for a few hours each day.

Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?

It was great to see how wild and vast the Southern Ocean is and learn more about the environment.

Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?

No. I think they did a good job of trying to prepare me for the experience.

How prepared and excited for Antarctica did you feel?

I believe I was well prepared.
