What was your most memorable moment?

Experiencing the power of the Drake Passage, we had the Drake Shake both ways, made me understand the risks of the early explorers and the extreme ecosystems. Seeing a leopard seal catch and flay a penguin reminded me that nature is not cuddly.

Were Swoop right to recommend Oceanwide Expeditions?

Yes

Tell us about Zodiac excursions

Super fun, and I always felt safe. The drivers always gave us the choice to return early if the weather was unpleasant. The drivers gave us information about what we were seeing and always put us in great positions to see wonderful sights.

Tell us about the expedition team

The entire team was outstanding, very approachable, shared so much knowledge, and were fun to be around. Jess and Marco are super funny, and Saskia was always a delight to talk to.

Tell us about the Ortelius

Wow, what a lovely ship! I loved the size and basic accommodations. The port hole twin room was much larger than I thought it would be. It was amazing to be allowed on the bridge. I thoroughly enjoyed the ship.

Something Else?

This was a great experience!

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?

Try to pack very lightly. We took only carry on, relying on Merino wool clothing and planning to wash items in the sink. It was convenient to wear casual clothes and not be concerned about how we looked, just that we stayed warm.

Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?

Yes, it has reinforced my belief that we need to value, protect, and preserve the places we call home. The “important” parts of our planet are everywhere and every place is worthy of our appreciation and concern for the future. Antarctica is specially protected, which is important, and we need to extend that feeling to where we each live every day. On the flippant side, penguins are silly!

Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?

Thanks for all the great communication and for answering our questions along the way.

How prepared and excited for Antarctica did you feel?

Very prepared, and incredibly excited! I appreciate all the information we received in advance.
