Tell us about the expedition team
Expedition team was enthusiastic and kind and well organized. My favorite lecture was given by Wei on the physics of penguin poop.
Tell us about the Ortelius
Vessel is utilitarian, as advertised. Hot water for showers and a (limited) free WiFi provided. Food was OK; servers were great. I would choose this ship again for an expedition where an ice mover is needed. I would not choose this ship if the same journey was possible with a more luxurious ship, for a comparable price.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?
Layers and an open adventurous spirit will make the journey fantastic. Even if seasickness is an issue, the Drake passage is worth it, but be prepared for several days of feeling unwell.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
The trip reinforced my belief that the world's climate is quickly changing and the impacts will be far reaching.
Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?
Group pickup times should not be listed as an absolute time. If the driver may arrive at 12:40p for a 1p pickup time, better to inform me I should be available for pickup from 12:40p+ with driver expected to arrive by 1p. I missed breakfast before a hike because the driver was there 20 min early.
How prepared and excited for Antarctica did you feel?
I felt well prepared. My excitement increased with my proximity to the continent.
