Falkland Islands
The Falkland Islands are located in the South Atlantic Ocean and are located about 250 nautical miles (290 miles) from the coast of mainland Argentina, at the tip of Patagonia.
Some Antarctic cruises visit the Falkland Islands on their way to Antarctica in order to take advantage of their abundant wildlife including Elephant seals and Magallanic penguins. It's also a lovely place to walk round and there's a museum depicting island life and documenting the Falklands war.
The Falkland Islands are part of a continuing sovereignty dispute between Britain and Argentina, where the islands are referred to as Islas Malvinas, similar to the name given to it by the first settler on the island in 1764, Louis Antoine de Bougainville.
