Ken's Ship:
MV UshuaiaOverall, how was your trip?
Everything about the trip to the Peninsula aboard MV Ushuaia was wonderful. The ship, crew, staff, and especially the expedition leaders were great. They really took care of us well and ensured that we all had the journey of a lifetime. The landscapes and seascapes were breathtakingly otherworldly. Of special note were the awesome tabular icebergs and the various hues of the ice and snow. Penguins topped the list for the wildlife experience. And for the humans, we met some interesting fellow passengers from around the world. The certificate and info disc were welcome surprises, icing on the cake.
In one sentence, what did you think of Antarctica? Did it live up to your expectations?
The voyage to Antarctica exceeded all my expectations -- you have to experience it to understand why it is so special.
Would you visit again?
Maybe
How was the service that Swoop provided?
Everyone at Swoop (Alex, John, the other Alex, and Jen) was very helpful and professional. The fact that they have personal experience in Antarctica made their guidance especially useful. The ship, voyage, and cabin they recommended perfectly fulfilled my needs. Pretty much everything exceeded my expectations. And the toll-free phone number that worked from America provided a great way to communicate.
How likely is it that you would recommend Swoop to a friend?
10 out of 10
How were your experiences on the zodiac excursions and shore landings?
While the on-board experience was an adventure in itself, the zodiac excursions and shore landings were extraordinary. Loved them all and there was quite a variety -- too much to describe in detail here. Icebergs, penguins, seals, research stations, surreal landscape, volcanic crater, polar plunge, etc., etc. The expedition staff and zodiac crew were fantastic.
How would you describe {vessel.title} if talking to somebody potentially interested in going to Antarctica, and what tips would you pass on?
MV Ushuaia has a lot going for it. Since it is relatively small (less than 100 passengers) everyone got to go ashore on all landings. Plus, we got to meet and get to know many interesting people from around the world. Our cabin was comfortable and the unexpected upgrade, which included a desk, made our stay more enjoyable. Our special dietary needs were excellently accommodated. Would certainly recommend the Ushuaia to anyone desiring a memorable Antarctica adventure. A grab bar in the shower would have been helpful during the Drake Passage sections of the voyage.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?
1. Plan ahead, around a year ahead 2. Do your homework (i.e., research) 3. Save up for the trip, it will be pricey 4. Use airline/credit card award miles for the flights 5. Get to Ushuaia 2 or 3 days before your voyage departs 6. Call Swoop Antarctica!
