HondiusWhat was your most memorable moment?
Our ship encountered a huge group of feeding humpback whales. We were surrounded by them for approx. 1.5 hours as we watched them feed, play, breech, dive... it was an enchanting experience. I never thought I would be so up close to these beautiful creatures.

Tell us about the expedition team
The expedition team was amazing! The team had such a great variety of experience and backgrounds. They were friendly and helpful, and if they didn't know the answer to a question, they would find out. Sara, the team leader, was a STAR! She was always fine-tuning our activities based on weather and other conditions. She really set a positive and fun mood for the trip and her team. I'm so glad that she was our Lead! The lectures were great and covered a wide range of topics. My favorites were about the geography of Antarctica and glaciers. I missed a few unfortunately because of seasickness.
Tell us about the Hondius
The ship was fantastic. Super clean and wonderful crew to take care of all of our needs. There was enough space in the common areas to feel not too crowded. The food was plentiful and a good variety. We were a family of vegetarians and were provided excellent vegetarian dishes.
Tell us about the wildlife
It was amazing to be able to see penguins and other birds, plus seals up close on the excursions. We also saw lots of wildlife from the ship.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?
I can't think of anything to take that wasn't suggested in our planning materials. I would say that to be open to changing plans and a little bit easy going is a better attitude for this type of trip (as for any travel). The weather did impact some of our plans, but Sara, the Expedition Crew Leader, made tweaks and changes so that we were still busy and enjoying our trip.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
Yes, I feel so fortunate to have been able to experience this clean and unspoiled part of the earth. It has inspired our family to pay even more attention to environmental issues than before. This is due in part to the education and exposure to the issues by the Expedition Team lectures and conversations, as well as just the experience of being there and seeing in person.
Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?
I can't think of anything.
Was there anything else Swoop could have done for you to help you prepare for your trip?
No, I felt that we were prepared as well as necessary!
