Greg MortimerWhat was your most memorable moment?
This is so hard to answer because there were so many memorable moments. I think our most memorable moments was during our first kayak trip. We landed our kayaks on a rocky beach to go see a penguin rookery. After getting out of the kayaks, we turned around to see dozens of Gentoo penguins walking by and going about their penguins business a handful of meters away. Nothing prepares you for how many penguins you'll see, how unfazed they are by you, and how adorable they are.

Tell us about the wildlife
We saw a blue whale and her calf (a rarity) during our Drake Passage and that set the tone for the trip. We saw multiple whale species, multiple penguin species, sea birds, and seals. We captured great photos and were able to trade photos with other passengers as well.
Tell us about Zodiac excursions
We kayaked at every opportunity so we didn't take too many zodiac trips. During the ones we did take, we felt safe and well prepared.
Tell us about the expedition team
The expedition team made this trip a 10/10. First and foremost, our kayak guides Russell, Peter, and Ivan. Russell had such passion for kayaking and sea fauna. Peter would scout out the best areas to paddle and point out interesting features of the coastline, glaciers, and sea ice. Ivan was helping everyone improve their paddling and, since he was the newest guide, was awestruck by Antarctica along with us. Flo the expedition leader maximized our time in Antarctica, despite some rough weather. Hillary got us ready for the camping experience and had us in stitches every time she spoke to us. Jill and Dani included some humor in their lectures on the fauna of Antarctica. We learned so much. John "The Dude" Dudeney was a wealth of knowledge on the history of Antarctic exploration and research. We never missed his lectures.
Tell us about the Greg Mortimer
The ship was an excellent blend of luxury and expedition. The food was very good for an expedition ship and probably a step down from a luxury ship. The wait staff (especially our waitress Sharra) was excellent and attentive. Common areas and cabins were very comfortable and well appointed. The kayaking gear was very new and of great quality. We are vegetarian and there were a few options at each meal.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?
Go to Antarctica as soon as possible. The kayaking allowed us to get a different view than many of the people who did the zodiac landings. We were very happy with that. Our advice would be to do as much as you can while you're there. The Camping was very special. People of all ages did the polar plunge. You'll never regret that you did more.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
We were able to see and hear the effect that climate change is having on the continent. It has definitely pushed us to do more and to get the word out.
Was there anything else Swoop could have done for you to help you prepare for your trip?
Most packing lists include the types of items to bring, but not much on quantities. We kind of figured that out by doing a lot of internet searched and reading a lot of forum posts. It would be helpful to have general guidelines.
