Tell us about Zodiac excursions
Yes, these were great and the boat's staff were excellent at keeping everyone safe.
Tell us about the expedition team
Jeff, Michael and Lisa were very knowledgeable and I enjoyed their lectures. Favorites were "Climate Change" by Michael, "Ocean Clean-up" by Jeff and the photography lecture by Lisa. Some of the other lecturers seemed to only know what was on their slides, reading from them and not answering questions in-depth. It wasn't possible to engage many people on deck for the Citizen Science projects because you couldn't hear what the leaders were saying (Jeannine and Michael) without a microphone and they made no to effort to gather people in or speak more loudly. As a whole, the group was not very outgoing or friendly, often keeping to themselves most of the time (even after our COVID clearance time). For instance, they didn't automatically look up and acknowledge a guest's presence if they were sitting at the 3rd deck desk, or make eye contact, etc. Also, I had a birthday during the trip and while many of the ship's staff wished me a happy birthday, none of the expedition team did. In our many other experiences with nature tours and the naturalists, staff was much more friendly, interactive and inclusive.
Tell us about the Island Sky
Everything about the Island Sky was great except for the lounge and bar furniture (chairs and couches) which need to be replaced if the ship will continue to be used. All the ship's staff were wonderfully warm, welcoming and friendly, and very hard-working.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?
This is a great trip for anyone who wants to see this amazing part of the world except for people who are avid birders.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
I hope to share information about the need for local plastic/garbage clean-up, especially in coastal areas.
