Akademik Sergey VavilovOverall, how was your trip?
It was amazing - beyond expectations. At times, it was quite physically challenging but always entirely safe. It is virtually impossible to describe the sense of wonder of being in a pristine landscape, quite unlike anything one has seen before. I have walked in the Himalayas, been to the Sahara, visited the Grand Canyon - but the experience of Antarctica tops them all.
In one sentence, what did you think of Antarctica? Did it live up to your expectations?
Awesome.
Would you visit again?
Yes
How was the service that Swoop provided?
Absolutely first class at all times. The choice of ship was perfect for us.
How likely is it that you would recommend Swoop to a friend?
10 out of 10
If Swoop arranged some of your travel before/after your voyage. How did we do?
Ours was a complicated seven week tour. Arrangements worked extraordinarily well. Our only real hiccup was that our Virgin train broke down at Preston at the start of our trip! Detailed comments to follow.
How were your experiences on the zodiac excursions and shore landings?
For me, the landing highlight was Port Lockroy which I found fascinating. The new post mistress, Sally, thumbed a lift on our ship. The expedition staff were very thoughtful, knowledgeable and professional. Icebergs - stunning shapes and colours. To be honest, I am into scenery more than wildlife, but I loved watching the penguins fighting over shiny pebbles and to see a group of Orca whales close to the ship was very special.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
It has made me very conscious of climate change and the need to preserve a very special wilderness. I am keen to get involved.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?
Just go - but make sure that it is in a sustainable way. If necessary, sell your grannie. Think very carefully about which ship is right for you. The Vavilov suited us perfectly.
Is there anything you would recommend we change to make trips like yours more environmentally sustainable?
Dare I say, steer folk away from the new larger breed of expedition ships which are currently being promoted. I fear for the impact they may have.
Anything else? Tell us anything you’d like to share that we forgot to ask! It’s ok to leave this empty too :-)
My only other comment is that visitors must take on board and accept how weather dependent the expeditions are. We were delayed a day in Punta Arenas but very lucky on the whole.
