Tell us about the Ortelius
We were upgraded to one of the nicest cabins on the ship. Can't complain. Super comfortable and great to stay in for 12 days. The quality of food was excellent. Nice wines to pair and the right price per glass.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
Didn't change my perspective. More to add to understanding the entire world. I do now want to take more trips focused on wildlife. I typically pick adventurous activities like hiking or cakyaking.
Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?
Our travel insurance policy required a substantial amount for heli evacuation. To my understanding and what I was told from Swoop is this would give Oceanwide the ability to pick up a passenger for an emergency evacuation and take them back to Ushuaia. During the first briefing on the ship, we were told that was not the case. Despite having a helideck on board, it wasn't for emergency evacuations. If any of the 100+ passengers had to be evacuated, they would turn the ship around (no questions asked). This discrepancy was unsettling and should be clarified to future passengers to manage expectations effectively. Everyone onboard has put in a substantial amount a money and if someone on the ship had an idiotic moment or didn't disclose a previous health condition that caused an accident, everyone would suffer. There may be parts that I don't understand, but these are just my thoughts. I also suggest requiring health declaration forms, especially for passengers over 60, to mitigate risks in the challenging Antarctic environment.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?
You truly get to experience Antarctica on a small 100 passenger ship. Amazing.
