Were Swoop right to recommend Quark Expeditions?

Yes

Tell us about Zodiac excursions

We enjoyed being out on the Zodiacs. The team members made the most of our time out and tried to get us to where we could see wildlife, icebergs, etc. All team members were very personable.

Tell us about the expedition team

All were knowledgeable and friendly. I'm amazed at these people who are so educated in a specific area (ornithology, history, geology, etc.) but also people who enjoy doing expeditions. You can tell they really enjoy what they do.

Tell us about the Paddling

This was my favorite thing! We had a beautiful day to be out on the water. Our team leader was fun and friendly and did his best to show us all the wonders of Antarctica as we paddled around in the ocean. Such an awesome experience! I would definitely recommend this!

Tell us about the Camping

I was a little nervous about camping, but hey, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity so you have to do it, right? It was amazing. The gear they provide for sleeping out is great. I stayed warm. I kept peeking out of my sleeping bag throughout the night to see if it ever got dark and it didn't. People are amazed when they learn we slept out overnight and that we didn't even have a tent! I would recommend this! (The crew is also looking for the best night to camp so to have the best optimal conditions.)

Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?

You don't need to pack as much stuff as you think you do. And if you're out hiking, you do get pretty warm. We way overdressed for the days we hiked. We were worried about motion sickness. We took the patches and I'm not sure if that helped or hurt. They did give out motion sickness pills the first day. I wished I would have talked with the doctor more about what was the best thing to use. I think we would have done better with the pill over the patch.

Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?

It was so surreal and unreal being there. It's still hard to believe that we were there. Such a beautiful place. PIctures will never capture the colors of the ice, the water, the expanse. So, so, so amazing! Our grandchildren love all the pictures of penguins. Unbelievable how many there were at every place! For me, we were on such a small part of Antarctica. It is so vast. It blows my mind that explorers ever figured out the continent. Mind blowing.

How prepared and excited for Antarctica did you feel?

Very excited and prepared as much as we could be without having done anything like this before.
