Tell us about Zodiac excursions
We felt safe at all times. We liked that they had a planned objective, and kept to the time rather than bowing to a few who may have wanted to go back to the ship earlier than us (as separate from landings). We always felt the time went to quickly.
Tell us about the expedition team
Outstanding! All were knowledgeable and fun. Ross Day was a standout because of his intellect with heavy dose of humor! Noah, the ornithologist, was exceptional. Honestly, it doesn't seem right to single out individuals, all worked very hard and were creative and approachable.
Tell us about the Ocean Explorer
Exceeded our expectations! Have never been on a cruise before, we were a bit concerned but the number of passengers did now seem too large. We were very happy with our cabin with the big sliding door and small balcony. We kept the drapes open at all times with the fear we might miss something. Food was amazing! We bonded with several of the hospitality staff who were professional and very warm & friendly. We did not anticipate the variety of cuisine, freshness or high quality. Great wines! Exceptional all!
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?
Strongly consider number of passengers (126 present on our trip). Select cabin with largest possible view; not size of cabin.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
I have a great respect for the natural world and have wanted to go to Antarctica for 50 years - especially after my job that gave me the opportunity to work in the Arctic. Our planet is amazing and it was significant to us that protection of all is of vital importance, again has the scientists & historians wove through their lectures. Speaking to the choir aboard our ship but it can not be said enough - not force fed but just in the excitement and reverence the ship's team exemplified.
How prepared and excited for Antarctica did you feel?
Well prepared - nothing we would do differently. Extremely excited for many years! Able to convince my husband that my 70th birthday and our 40th wedding anniversary warranted the expenditure. For the record, my husband did not share my enthusiasm before departure but it probably changed him more than me.
