What was your most memorable moment?
Icebergs everywhere. I’ve seen lots of icebergs before in Newfoundland but no where near the quantity.
Which of the following best describes your adventure?
Great holiday
On a scale of 0 to 10, how likely is it that you would recommend Swoop to a friend or colleague?
7 out of 10
Tell us about Zodiac excursions
Most memorable part was when bunches of penguins popped up 50 feet from the Zodiac. I found the larger zodiacs a problem because if you were seated behind the driver, you could not hear what the driver was saying.
Tell us about the expedition team
Spent a bunch of time with Gunther. His knowledge was wide and always had an answer immediately, even if it was that he was uncertain. Never felt like he was making up an answer when he didn’t know. Had some problems understanding a couple of accents but generally figured out what they were trying to say.
Tell us about the SH Vega
Basically all good. Had a problem figuring out the heating system and I’m still uncertain if I know how it was supposed to work but when it got too warm, we just opened the door to the balcony. Food was great. Ate some things I had never had before and some of them I didn’t like but I don’t know if it was good or not because I don’t know what it should taste like. I’ll try anything - only then do you know if you like it or not. I did get a piece of wire in my food one day, probably from a wire brush to clean a grill. Cabin was very nice and I would go on it again. I am going to the Mediterranean next year but they go alternate years but not next year or I would go with them.
Do you have any tips or advice for other people planning a trip to Antarctica?
Read everything you can before you go. I met so many people who didn’t understand that the weather is in charge of where you go and what you do. But also don’t believe everything you read. It just prepares you for possibilities you might have to accept. If you want to see real small penguin chicks, go in January. By the time we arrived in almost mid February, the chicks are as big as the parents. They grow from 2” to 18” in 6 weeks.
Has your experience changed your perspective in any way?
I have never enjoyed cruises but this is really the only way to step on Antarctica. The expedition style and the quality/finishes/food were better than any ship I have been on before. It made me willing to go on a cruise again.
Do you have any recommendations for Swoop, or feedback about the team?
The only concern I have is the proper updating of status on the adventure planner, as previously mentioned. When I went in a second time or more, it would show blanks where I had previously entered information do I would enter it again and when I closed it, it showed completed but 5 minutes later, it would go back to overdue.
How prepared and excited for Antarctica did you feel?
I felt very prepared, especially compared to other people’s experiences that I read about then also heard about on board. I didn’t really feel much excited because all of the preparation I did ahead of time burnt me out by the time I got there. But the first sight of iceberg fields got me excited again.
