Detaille Island
One of the first stops after crossing the Antarctic Circle at 66 degrees south, Detaille Island is a tiny island on the western coast of the Arrowsmith Peninsula on the Antarctic Peninsula. Although sheltered from weather coming in from the west, Detaille is difficult to reach due to the ice choked waters surrounding it, but usually accessible during the second half of summer (December/January).
Aside from the small colony of Adelie Penguins that live there there is an interesting abandonded British base, which alothough deserted back in 1959 still has an air that they have literally just up and left. As part of the programme to clear abandoned huts up the British Antarctic Heritage Trust has been here making changes and trying to restore things back to the way they were.
