Plancius
Ship overview:
Built in 1976 as an oceanographic research vessel for the Royal Dutch
Navy, the Plancius underwent a major two-year multi-million dollar
refurbishment in 2009, transforming her into the modern, comfortably
appointed expedition-style ship she is today - an ideal basecamp for
polar exploration.

Why we like this ship
- Following the ship’s rebuild she combines the authenticity of an expedition ship on the outside with the comfort and amenities of a well-appointed 3* hotel on the inside
- The ship's diesel-electric propulsion system greatly reduces noise and vibration, making the journey more comfortable, particularly at night
- A wide choice of different cabin types, including Triples & Quads, all are modern with en-suite bathrooms and flat screen TVs with streamed movies
- Twin gangways on the starboard side allows two zodiacs to be loaded at once which ensures minimal waiting time during embarkation and disembarkation
- Stunning panorama views through the large windows of the observation lounge mean you won’t miss out on wildlife sightings while keeping warm onboard
- Offers a wide range of adventure activities, particularly on the active Basecamp voyages, including being one of the few ships to offer diving
We think it's worth noting...
- The ship does not have stabilisers but uses its bulky tonnage to provide some stability in rough seas
- The voyage fare doesn't include a pre-cruise hotel night and guests need to either rent or bring their own parka jacket. However, this is reflected in the price
Alex Mudd says
I like the ship's simple but modern styling - it's comfortable and homely, without being fussy. The crew are incredibly friendly and welcoming - I felt like part of the family!

The twin cabin was excellent. The food was incredible, especially considering the size of the ship and the number of people they had to feed. I was very impressed with all the fresh fruit and vegetables served the whole time. No small feat to stock up for! I would definitely go on the Plancius again.

I enjoyed this ship, but would describe much of it as functional as opposed to luxury/very comfortable. The food was great. The boat crew were excellent. I am more than happy to travel on a functional boat rather than a luxurious boat. Any extras were very fairly priced.

There was a sense of community on the Plancius that I believe was facilitated by all the staff aboard the ship. I prepared myself for a more humble ship, but I was happy to see that it had everything I needed for the journey. They are very honest about the 3-star hotel accommodations; it is not luxury, but again, it's what you need and a little more for an expedition trip. Our cabin was small, but it was space enough (Twin Window). The food aboard the Plancius was wonderful. Our chef did an incredible job and again, the service staff was amazing and flexible, especially when we were feeling sick along the Drake. There was a great variety of cuisines and accommodations for vegetarian and gluten-free diets. I would 100% choose to journey aboard the Plancius again. Read the full review

I would choose this ship again. The ship itself seemed sturdy and it more than handled the Drake Passage! Fairly well designed, with easy-to-find dining and lounge areas. The relatively small number of passengers meant we could get to know some of our fellow passengers but more than that it meant we could all get at least one chance to do the add-on activities. The staff, the crew - all so friendly and helpful! Impressive that they knew all of our names within a matter of hours. Food was excellent and I loved our cabin (501). Our cabin was a great size for two people and I liked the fact that there was no deck outside the windows, so we didn't have to worry about people walking by and looking in. Read the full review

I liked the fairly small ship instead of a monster boat. Downside was no exercise facilities at all.
